For those who don't know, Fire Emblem is a Japanese medieval fantasy console-based RPG. It started back on the Famicom, or Super Nintendo. Since then, it has grown international, expanding first through Gameboy, then Gamecube, and migrating to the NintendoDS. The more recent game, FE:Awakening, was a huge international sale, and widely known to the youth who play the DS.
The game itself is a tile-board, turn-based RPG, where you have a player avatar unit (in most cases) that guides a party of physical fighters and magic users as a strategist. The goal is simple enough for a fantasy setting: defeat the evil empire who is awakening a darker power to rule the world!
Each gameplay is extremely unique, with many variables including variable unit levelling, assorted weapons, permanent character death, and a RNG that can be as rewarding as it is unforgivng. This makes for amazing replayability value, and I've played FE8 for thousands of hours over dozens of playthroughs for about 13 years.
My personal favorite is FE8: The Sacred Stones, though I have played multiple and am familiar with most of the games.
Gotta say, it's hard not to love Marisa, a myrmidon with a shamshir (something like a thin scimitar with HUGE crit threat). Her nickname is The Crimson Flash, and she's a merc-turned-assassin who is beyond compare. I also enjoy Ross, a young journeyman whose village was destroyed by bandits (cliche much?). He trains through the game to be as good as his father, a retired commander. Eventually, he far surpasses him, and becomes a towering berserker of frightening strength, speed, and luck. Later, you gain Ewan, a magic pupil barely over 10 years old, who eventually masters all kinds of magic: Light, Dark, and Nature. He also has intriguing luck, and is able to topple the greatest enemies with ancient magic and youthful guile.
